The relationship between good governance and performance, has been debated extensively in the literature with only limited gain in terms of understanding the drivers of the relationship. The client wished to explore the topic as a basis for developing a research program on the topic. Incept’s, approach was to take a different direction to the bulk of the literature and ask directors themselves how they thought the relationship worked. We interviewed 102 Chairs covering Publically Listed, Private, Not-for-profit and Public Sector organisations. The results questioned many of the assumptions underpinning current governance research. The research was completed within 6 months and presented at the AICD Annual conference to overwhelmingly positive reviews. You can read the summary here, and the full report here.
